Katz, Marshall & Banks partner Debra Katz was quoted in a number of publications recently discussing the formation of the Legal Network for Gender Equity – a partnership of attorneys dedicated to providing legal resources to victims of sexual harassment and sex discrimination.
The National Women’s Law Center established the network, at least in part, due to the current presidential administration’s assault on the rights of women and girls. Among other high profile and significant policy actions, the administration has allowed for more employers to opt out of providing no-cost birth control to their employees, revoked federal guidelines on investigating campus sexual assault, and stopped EEOC efforts to collect data and study pay disparities.
Ms. Katz has been very supportive of the NWLC’s initiative: “NWLC’s leadership has demonstrated to at least two generations of women attorneys, like myself, how to be fierce legal advocates. As members of the Network, my firm and dozens of others in the private bar will help ensure that institutions that seek to deprive us of our basic legal and constitutional rights to equal pay, gender equality, and reproductive rights are held accountable.”
Recent high-profile sexual harassment stories in the past year – from Hollywood executive Harvey Weinstein to Bill O’Reilly and Roger Ailes at Fox News – have drawn attention to systemic workplace harassment and left many feeling vulnerable and without legal protection. “We need one another,” says Ms. Katz, “this network will provide people who participate with critical camaraderie and support to be zealous in their advocacy.”
So far, more than 70 attorneys from 15 states have joined the network. Lawyers who would like to participate can sign up on the NWLC’s website.
